Specialized Medical Director Coverage Designed to Bridge the Gaps in Your Clients’ Policies

Empower Your Clients with Medical Director Insurance

Your client’s Medical Director role is going to need its own layer of protection beyond a standard malpractice policy. Even if they’re not hands-on with treatment in that capacity, they’re carrying supervisory and administrative responsibility for clinical operations, protocols, and medical staff, and that kind of responsibility creates liability exposure tied to decisions, guidance, or omissions that impact patient care.

Medical Director coverage is built specifically for that gap. It responds to claims arising from: oversight of medical procedures and staff, development or approval of clinical protocols, administrative and supervisory duties tied to the directorship, alleged negligence in the Medical Director capacity itself and in some cases, direct patient care they may still be providing alongside the administrative role

If your client doesn’t have this in place, they’re carrying significant personal and financial exposure that a typical malpractice or general liability policy likely won’t pick up. Getting this coverage on the books protects them, and honestly protects you as the broker of record, since it closes a gap that could otherwise come back as an E&O issue down the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Medical Director insurance provides liability protection for the administrative and supervisory duties performed in a Medical Director role. It may also cover some direct patient care for certain industries.

The cost of medical director insurance can vary based on several factors. Insurance providers consider these factors when determining the premium for a policy.

Here are some key factors that influence the cost of medical director insurance:

  1. Size and scope of business – The size of your client’s business based on annual gross receipts can impact your insurance cost. Businesses with higher gross receipts typically carry greater exposure due to the volume of clients served and the range of services offered. As revenue increases, so does the potential risk and liability, which may result in higher premiums.
  2. Type of facility the medical director is overseeing – Certain facilities present higher oversight risks than others, which can lead to more significant long-term exposure if a claim occurs. As a result, the type of facility they oversee can influence the overall cost of your insurance.
  3. Claims history – Insurance companies consider the claims history and whether or not your insured has had any actions taken against their license when determining the cost of coverage. If your client has a history of claims, it may result in higher premiums.
  4. State Regulations – Insurance premiums can vary by state. Some states have stricter regulations, higher claim frequency, or more challenging legal environments, all of which can increase the cost of providing coverage. Because of this, Medical Director insurance may be priced higher in states with more complex regulatory or litigation climates.

Yes, medical director insurance policies typically have exclusions or limitations that outline specific situations or circumstances where coverage may not apply or may be limited. These exclusions and limitations can vary depending on the service being provided. Some of the main exclusions are:

  1. Interpreting medical imaging
  2. Interpreting diagnostic tests
  3. Operations not specifically listed on the policy
  4. Working outside your state regulations

It’s important to carefully review the insurance quote and policy and understand the exclusions and limitations that may apply.
